In an industry as subjective as fashion, it can be hard to discern the true geniuses from the lucky few who stumble onto the right look at the right time. When Christian Dior himself, however, calls another designer the “Couturier of Couturiers,” this creator’s place at the forefront of fashion is crystal clear. Such is the place of Cristobal Balenciaga.
Perhaps it is surprising then, that this master was born the son of a seamstress in a small Basque fishing village and received formal training only through the benevolence of the town’s most prominent woman. Marquesa de Casa Torres funded his studies in Madrid in exchange for a steady supply of his creations.
Despite his humble beginnings, Balenciaga quickly proved to be a genuine style-maker. In 1918, at age twenty-three, he opened his first haute couture house in San Sebastian. His shop then expanded to Madrid, Barcelona and ultimately, Paris. Best known for crafting a new streamlined silhouette for women, Balenciaga employed a linear style that directly contrasted with Dior’s curvy New Look of the late ’40s. Currently, Balenciaga’s Creative Director, Nicolas Ghesquiere, carries on this modern aesthetic in both the fashion and accessories collections, enabling today’s woman to experience the essence of classic Old World couture.
