I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Melissa Biggs formerly of Baywatch and now owner and designer of PGD Style. Ms. Biggs spoke to me about her design influences, her line, and her life in general. Read this great interview and find out more about the line below:
(Melissa Biggs is wearing her PGD Style black jacket and tank in her photo to the right).
1.) Where did you get your start in designing?
IT WAS DURING MY MODELING CAREER THAT I WAS OFFERED A JOB AS AN ASSISTANT DESIGNER FOR A MAJOR FURNISHINGS DESIGN HOUSE. I ENDED UP WORKING DIRECTLY UNDER SOME WORLD RENOWNED ARCHITECTS AND IT WAS HERE THAT I GOT MY FIRST TASTE OF THE BUSINESS.
And how did you decide to start your own line? I LOVED DESIGN SO MUCH THAT A FEW YEARS LATER I FOUNDED MY OWN DESIGN HOUSE, FOCUSING ON A LINE OF CONSUMER PRODUCTS TARGETING WAL*MART. I MENTORED UNDER GOOD FRIEND, PAUL MARCIANO, CEO OF GUESS? INC. WHO INSPIRED ME TO DEVELOP MY OWN LINE OF CLOTHES FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF MY WAL*MART PROJECT, SO I FOUNDED P.G.D. STYLE LUXURY CLOTHING COLLECTION AND SET OUT TO DESIGN THE PERFECT T-SHIRT. IT WASN’T LONG AFTER I STARTED DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING A PRIVATE LABEL FOR GUESS? INC. Where did you get your first job? I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN A PRIVATE LABEL COLLECTION FOR GUESS? INC. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, HAVE ALWAYS WORKED FOR MYSELF Which designers did you apprentice? PAUL MARCIANO
2.) Where did you work and go to design school? I DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO GO TO DESIGN SCHOOL…I AM RESOURCEFUL AND SELF-TAUGHT.
3.) What is your daily inspiration? MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER AND THE FACT THAT I AM ABLE TO PLEASE OTHERS AND MAKE THEM SMILE THROUGH MY CREATIONS GIVES ME ALL THE INSPIRATION I NEED TO KEEP GOING
4.) Where do you shop? I LOVE CLASSIC AND TIMELESS PEICES SO I TYPICALLY SHOP AT JILL ROBERTS ON MONTANA AVE. Who are your favorite designers? I LOVE LOTTA STENSSON, VINCE, NANETTE LEOPORE,SPLENDID, DIANE VON FURSTENBERG, PAIGE DENIM, ROBERTO CAVALLI, INHABIT SWEATERS, AND TORY BURCH

7.) What is the best part of your day? THE MORNINGS. AFTER I GET MY DAUGHTER OFF TO SCHOOL AND HAVE MY TENNIS WORKOUT I COME BACK TO MY STUDIO WITH ALL MY JUICES FLOWING AND READY TO BE CREATIVE.
8.) What is the worse part of your day? I ENJOY EACH EVERY DAY AND ALL THE NEW AND EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES EACH ONE BRINGS.
9.) What advice do you have for young aspiring designers? DON’T GIVE UP!!!! AND DON’T TAKE ON THE WHOLE WORLD AT ONCE. IT IS SO EASY TO GET OVERWHELMED WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE AND THEN JUST GIVE UP OR NEVER START AT ALL. TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF OF YOURSELF AND LIVE IN THE MOMENT. SIMPLIFY. BREAK IT DOWN AND WORK AT IT A TINY BIT EACH DAY EVEN IF IT IS ONLY FOR A FEW MINUTES. THEN EACH DAY GRADUALLY PUSH YOURSELF A LITTLE FARTHER. FARTHER.
10.) IF I were to buy 2 pieces from your collection- which 2 pieces should I buy for Fall and which 2 pieces should I buy for Spring? I RECOMMEND ONE BASIC AND ONE NOVELTY…FOR FALL: A MUST HAVE IS MY BASIC LONG SLEEVE TEE – GOES WITH EVERYTHING – AND MY TURTLENECK DRESS – IT’S COZY AND CHIC……..FOR SPRING: A NO-BRAINER, MY V-NECK T IS AMAZING AND COMFORTABLE – AND MY T-SHIRT DRESS IS GOING TO BE FABULOUS AND CAN BE DRESSED UP OR DOWN
11.) What were your inspirations behind the Spring collection? Behind the Fall collection? THE INSPIRATION BEHIND ALL MY COLLECTIONS IS CLASSIC, COMFORTABLE AND TIMELESS PEICES THAT GO WITH EVERYTHING.
12.) Is there any thing you dislike about what you do? I WISH IT WAS EASIER AND MORE COST-EFFECTIVE TO MANUFACTURE IN THE U.S.A. BUT OTHER THAN THAT I REALLY LOVE WHAT I DO.
13.) Do you like feedback from the people who wear your clothes? YES…Do you often hear the feedback? I DO AND IT IS WHAT INSPIRES ME TO CONTINUE TO PRODUCE CLOTHES THAT PEOPLE LOVE AND WEAR.
14.) What is your favorite meal of the day? Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner? DINNER B’CAUSE IT’S MORE COMPLETE AND FULFILLING WHEN THERE’S GOOD FRIENDS AND GOOD WINE What is your favorite food? ITALIAN What is your favorite restaurant? CAPO IN SANTA MONICA

16.) Can you tell me about Baywatch- your part? BAYWATCH WAS A FABULOUS EXPERIENCE. I STARTED OUT ON THE SHOW AS A PHOTO-DOUBLE FOR ALEXANDRA PAUL AND OTHER GUEST-STARRING MODELS THEN BECAME A REGULAR LIFEGUARD. IT WAS A SMALL PART BUT IT LASTED FOR TWO SEASONS, I HAD MY OWN LIFEGUARD TOWER, GOT TO PLAY WITH ALL THE TOYS AND GO TO WORK AT THE BEACH…EVERYDAY!!! CAN’T BEAT THAT…..IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. James Caan: JAMES CAAN IS A FANTASTIC ACTOR AND IT WAS AN HONOR TO GET TO MEET HIM AND WORK WITH HIM ON LUCKY TOWN. KIRSTEN DUNST ALSO STARRED IN THE MOVIE AND WAS A DELIGHT AND INSPIRATION TO WATCH AND WORK ALONG SIDE AS WELL. and acting? ACTING WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY BLOOD AND A PART OF WHO I AM AND ALTHOUGH I DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME FOR IT NOW I STILL CONSIDER ALL PARTS WHEN OFFERED WHETHER BIG OR SMALL.
17.) You have a protein deficiency that you manage – can you tell my readers about that and what you do for that cause and how PGD Style contributes to it? CORRECT IN THE MIDST OF DEVELOPING P.G.D. STYLE I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ALPHA-1 DEFICIENCY – A PROTEIN DEFICIENCY THAT IS INCURABLE AND FATAL IF LEFT UNTREATED. IN A PERSON WITHOUT THE ALPHA-1 PROTEIN, WHICH BREAKS DOWN THE BODY’S OWN NATURAL ENZYMES, THESE ENZYMES ARE LEFT TO ATTACK THE VITAL ORGANS SUCH AS THE LUNGS AND LIVER, AND OVER TIME CAN CAUSE CIRRHOSIS, LIVER CANCER, EMPHYSEMA, COPD AND EVENTUALLY DEATH. MORE SHOCKINGLY, ALPHA-1 ONE AFFECTS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW THEY HAVE IT. ONLY 3,000 PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ARE CURRENTLY RECEIVING TREATMENT. AND BECAUSE IT IS CLASSIFIED AS RARE, A LOT OF DOCTORS DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT. I WAS GIVEN TWO YEARS TO LIVE — THREE YEARS AGO….WHEN ACTUALLY MY CONDITION IS COMPLETELY MANAGEABLE WITH WEEKLY PROTEIN-REPLACEMENT THERAPY.
