Donna Karan Imbues Travel Into her Spring 2011 Lines
With hues reminiscent of a Serengeti safari, Donna Karan’s Spring 2011 line draws inspiration from the desert. Sand, camel and tans dominate the color palette and loose, effortless glamour reigns. The mostly jersey and charmeuse pieces in this collection were designed to withstand the rough and tumble of both luggage and expedition, while still remaining elegant enough for the chicest of wanderlusters. A standout piece from the collection is the Crushed Metallic Twill Jacket
. The crumpled, bold texture and metallic sheen exude a warm richness and a flirty edge. This is Donna Karen’s desert, and boy is it fabulous.
Pair it with another hit from the collection—the Stretch Charmeuse Slip Dress. This silk charmeuse piece with a slit along the front leg follows Karan’s spring trend of crumpled elegance, with a crushed crepe overlay. Worn together or separate, both pieces are showstoppers in their simply serene beauty. It’s Donna Karan at her best.
For a more traditionally Karan look, try her Jersey Twist Dress
with cap sleeve. Pair it with her stylist flats and a light jacket for daywear, while donning your favorite pumps and clunky cuffs and bracelets for an easy transition to evening.
If her Donna Karan collection was all about the desert sun, then her DKNY Spring 2011 line was about NYC-meets-Paris. Notably absent from the Donna Karan line were any black pieces, but you can’t not give New Yorkers black attire. Karan obliged in her DKNY collection, pairing black trousers with camel-colored trenches and ooh-la-la scarves that screamed Parisian chic. This Cozy Scarf Vest from the collection features graphic print on satin and a shawl collar with draped open front for a loose silhouette with multifunctional wear.
The designer repeated the print in another hit from the line: The DKNY Printed Silk Crepe-De-Chine Combination Dress is casual and divine. The tailored, silk crepe-de-chine scoopneck bodice and handkerchief skirt create a balanced, elegant silhouette. It’s city living at its finest, and Donna Karan designs for the city woman.
When Donna Karan’s line debuted in 1985, the designer made a name for herself by providing seven essential staples that every woman should have in her closet. Her simple, elegant looks made mix-and-match fashionably acceptable. Her goal, she’s stated before, is to make it easy for the modern woman to dress, while still looking and feeling beautiful. She’s continued this tradition of providing chic, essential pieces throughout the decades. Having been crowned head designer for Anne Klein in the early 70s, the talented founded her own line in 1984 to much acclaim. Her Spring 2011 collection builds upon her past tradition of designing modern clothes for modern people and providing essentials, while showing the sophistication and refinement that only five decades in the biz can bring.
